Flying carpets are most often found in oriental fairy tales, where they serve as a means of transportation for their owners. They are most often associated with the oriental fairy tale 1001 Nights, but they have also been mentioned previously in the records of ancient civilizations in various historical periods. <\/p>\n

Interestingly, magic carpets are not mentioned anywhere in the Galand Manuscript (a 14th-century translation of fairy tales from the Syrian region), even though this translation is the oldest and contains the first 282 fairy tales.<\/p>\n

But the history of flying carpets can be traced back even further. King Solomon seems to be the first historical figure mentioned in connection with flying carpets. There are several versions of the story of the king and his carpet. One is said to have been written around the 13th century (by Isaac Ben Sherira) based on two older but lost records. <\/p>\n

In the story of Ben Sharire, the legendary Queen of Sheba (9th century BC) had a court alchemist who could make a small, brown rug float above the ground. Years of work and experience took their toll, and the alchemist perfected his knowledge so much that he realized that the secret to the flying carpets’ ability to fly lay in the way the wool was dyed, not in the way it was spun. <\/p>\n

When the Queen of Sheba heard of this progress, she sent one such carpet as a gift to King Solomon. The carpet was made of the finest green silk, woven with gold and silver threads, and was further decorated with priceless gems. <\/p>\n

When the carpet arrived at King Solomon’s, he was busy building the Temple of Jerusalem. He did not accept the gift, but one of his courtiers. When this indifference reached the queen’s ears, it broke her heart and from then on she refused to see or hear about flying carpets. Without the queen’s patronage, the alchemist and his masters were no longer able to make carpets, and the knowledge was supposedly forgotten forever. However, according to another version, the alchemist and his companions wandered the country in exile for several more years and finally settled somewhere in fertile Mesopotamia. <\/p>\n

Another story tells that King Solomon received a carpet as a gift straight from the god himself. The carpet was very large and could carry 40,000 people and easily fly with them into the sky. The king was naturally very proud, eventually even too much for the god’s ears, so the god decided to punish him. One day, when the carpet was in the air and no less than 40,000 men were on it, the angry god shook it and the men fell like dolls into the depths to their deaths. <\/p>\n

One of the stories about magic carpets is the one that tells about the Parthian king of the great empire Phraates II. in the 2nd century BC, who fought a war with his rival Antiochus VII, the ruler of the Seleucid Empire. Phraates flew over the Zagros Mountains on a flying carpet and from it destroyed the enemy army. with fire and lightning. When he returned, he flew over the heads of his subjects at a ceremonial reception. In another story, in the 3rd century, the Sassanid ruler Shapur also had a magic carpet with the help of which he flew into the Roman camp at night and kidnapped Valerian, who was sleeping soundly.<\/p>\n

Ben Sheirira believed that the famous Library of Alexandria, founded during the reign of Ptolemy I, had many flying carpets. Many would be curious to know the purpose, but it is important to know that the library contained all the knowledge of the ancient world in thousands of scrolls, in languages \u200b\u200bthat were considered ancient at the time. Unfortunately, everything was lost in a great fire that engulfed the entire building. Historical sources cite various figures who are said to be responsible for this act, from Julius Caesar to Amr Ibn Al As. <\/p>\n

The invincible Mongol army is said to have massacred the last master weavers of flying carpets and also confiscated the last specimens. When a prisoner of war dared to tell Genghis Khan that flying carpets were much more turbulent than the famous steppe ponies, he had him immediately beheaded and gave the order to burn all the confiscated carpets. Flying carpets also appear in Russian fairy tales, in one of which the famous Baba Yaga, an old witch, gives a carpet to Ivan the Fool, among other magical creatures that are supposed to help this folk hero in his challenges. <\/p>\n

In the West, writers also could not resist the charm of carpets. Mark Twain, in Captain Stormfield’s Visit to Paradise, mentions flying carpets as a completely common means of transport. Hans Christian Anderson wrote The Flying Suitcase, for which he found inspiration in One Thousand and One Nights. J.K. Rowling, the author of Harry Potter, mentions that in the wizarding Britain, flying carpets are strictly prohibited. <\/p>\n

From ancient books to video games, the idea of \u200b\u200bflying carpets never fades, reminding us of the rich culture of the Middle East where this beautiful story was born. Who knows, maybe in the not-so-distant future, flying carpets will once again rule the skies? <\/p>\n
