At the bazaar in Bidjar, the finest Kurdish rugs are sold, featuring some of the most beautiful variations of the Herati and Mina Khani designs. However, the most compact and fine rugs in this area are not made by the Kurds, but by a smaller Afshar clan living around the northern part of Bidjar in about 30 villages. These rugs are characterized by a central floral medallion combined with a geometric Herati design in the background. Blue, red, and beige in various shades predominate. These rugs usually have 3 wefts (cross threads) between two rows of symmetrical knots. A true Bidjar rug can be recognized by its distinctive design, but it should be noted that similar rugs are also made across the wider Kurdistan region. Yet only Bidjar rugs made in its immediate vicinity are so compact that, for transport to the bazaar, merchants must roll up even smaller rugs, as they simply cannot be folded. Bidjars repeatedly come to the forefront of interest at various international rug exhibitions, as they combine a virtually indestructible construction, beautiful color shades, refined craftsmanship, and an unpredictable, distinctive design.
