The original Caucasian style is expressed in the Gučani carpets, combined with some motifs from today’s neighbors, the Turkmen and Baluchi. For someone who wants a carpet with a primal character that reflects the true value of nomadic art, a carpet from the Gučani area is one of those rare exceptions that will satisfy even the most demanding collector of Persian nomadic carpets.

This area in northeastern Iran, bordering Afghanistan and Central Asia, is home to the Baluch, Turkmen and also Kurds. These Kurds were displaced from their homeland in the Caucasus and Kurdistan in the 16th century, during the rule of the Ottoman Turks. They were settled there to defend the Persian region from the invasions of the Uzbeks from Central Asia. The Kurds make large kilims with brocades in dark red and blue, and heavily decorated bags. It is often difficult to distinguish their products from those of neighboring peoples. Many Turkmen from the Khorasan region are members of the Teke and Yomut peoples, who emigrated from what was then Russia in the 19th century. Their kilims are recognizable by their dark red color with characteristic stylized flower motifs. They also make large bags and door curtains.
