The city of Kashan lies 250 km south of Tehran, in a large oasis by the Kavir Desert in central Iran. This area has been inhabited since ancient times; it was already important during the Sasanian dynasty, and later after the arrival of Islamic culture. Kashan rugs are made from the finest kork wool (from lambs’ necks). They are woven using the asymmetrical knotting technique (the Persian knot), which makes the rugs exceptionally fine yet very durable. They are characterized by a wide variety of floral patterns, as well as arabesques, palmettes, and leaf motifs; this design is ideal for classic interior décor. They represent the legacy of the golden age of rug making in Iran (16th and 17th centuries), when Shah Abbas was a great patron of this art.

Rugs from the city of Kashan, one of the oldest and most esteemed centers of Persian weaving art, represent the pinnacle of classical Persian aesthetics. Their orderly composition, rich symbolism, and refined color palette are why they are among the most popular choices for lovers of traditional rugs worldwide.

Kashan rug aesthetics are based on balance and harmony—recognizable by a central medallion with lavish floral ornaments that flow across the entire surface in the form of vignettes, leaves, and arabesques. The patterns are extremely detailed and executed with high precision, giving the rug a sense of delicacy and nobility.

The color palette of Kashan rugs typically includes deep reds, dark blues, ivory, and golden tones, and occasionally softer bluish or pastel shades. The colors are derived from natural dyes such as indigo, rhubarb roots, pomegranate, or walnut husks, which gives them a distinctive softness and warmth.
