This hand-knotted wool rug represents a fine example of a traditional Persian prayer rug. Its design is based on the prayer niche motif (mihrab), which is a central element of Islamic art and symbolizes the direction of prayer. The light ivory central field creates a sense of peace and spaciousness, while the richly ornamented borders give the rug elegance and distinctive decorative value.
Aesthetically, the rug combines refinement and balance. Dominant shades of ivory, dark blue, red, and black create a classic Persian color harmony. Particular attention is drawn to the floral motif descending from the top of the niche and the stylized columns along the sides of the central field. The borders are richly adorned with palmettes, flowers, and arabesques, creating a sense of depth and luxury without the rug feeling overdone.
By its stylistic features, the rug most likely originates from northwestern Iran, from a tradition associated with weaving workshops in the Tabriz area. Tabriz is one of the most important centers of Persian carpet weaving, known for fine knotting, precise ornamentation, and refined prayer compositions. The pattern and proportions of the motifs indicate the influence of the Tabriz school, although it is possible that the rug was also made in one of the smaller nearby weaving centers.
The rug is made of high-quality wool, giving it warmth, softness, and long-lasting durability. Wool is the traditional material for Persian rugs, as it allows rich color expression and excellent resistance to wear. With its restrained color scheme and classic pattern, this rug suits both traditional and contemporary interiors.
By appearance and craftsmanship, it can be broadly dated to the second half of the 20th century, when many high-quality hand-knotted rugs were still being produced in Iran to traditional patterns. It is a rug that combines aesthetic excellence, rich symbolism, and a long Persian weaving tradition, giving it both decorative and cultural value.
