Guchan carpets showcase an original Caucasian style, combined with motifs from their contemporary neighbors, the Turkmens and Baloch. For those seeking a rug with a primal character that reflects the true value of nomadic art, a carpet from the Guchan region is one of those rare exceptions that will satisfy even the most discerning collector of Persian nomadic rugs.

This region in northeastern Iran, bordering Afghanistan and Central Asia, is home to the Baloch, Turkmens, and also Kurds. These Kurds were relocated from their homeland in the Caucasus and Kurdistan as early as the sixteenth century, during the rule of the Ottoman Turks. They were settled there to defend the Persian region from Uzbek incursions from Central Asia. Kurds produce large kilims with brocades in dark red and blue, as well as heavily decorated bags. It is often difficult to distinguish their products from those of neighboring peoples. Many Turkmens from the Khorasan region are members of the Teke and Yomut tribes, who emigrated from what was then Russia in the nineteenth century. Their kilims are recognizable by their dark red color with characteristic stylized floral motifs. They also produce large bags and door hangings.
