The city of Kashan is located 250 km south of Tehran in a large oasis on the Kavir Desert in central Iran. This area has been inhabited since ancient times, and was important during the Sassanid dynasty, as well as later after the arrival of Islamic culture. Kashan carpets are made from the finest cork wool (from the necks of lambs), and are made using the asymmetrical knotting technique (Persian knot), which makes the carpets extremely fine and at the same time very durable. They are characterized by a variety of floral patterns, as well as arabesques, palmettes, and leaf motifs, and such designs are ideal for classic room decor. They represent the heritage of the golden age of carpet making in Iran (16th and 17th centuries), when Shah Abbas was a great supporter of this art.
