The city of Kashan is located 250 km south of Tehran in a large oasis bordering the Kavir Desert in central Iran. This area was inhabited in ancient times, holding significance during the Sasanian dynasty and later with the advent of Islamic culture. Kashan carpets are crafted from the finest kork wool (from lamb’s necks), utilizing the asymmetrical knotting technique (Persian knot), which renders the carpets exceptionally fine and highly durable. Characteristic features include diverse floral patterns, as well as arabesques, palmettes, and leaf motifs, making such designs ideal for classic interior decor. They represent the legacy of the golden age of carpet weaving in Iran (16th and 17th centuries), when Shah Abbas was a great patron of this art.

Carpets from Kashan, one of the oldest and most esteemed centers of Persian weaving art, represent the pinnacle of classical Persian aesthetics. Their ordered composition, rich symbolism, and refined color palette are why they are among the most popular choices for enthusiasts of traditional carpets worldwide.

The Aesthetics of Kashan Carpets are based on balance and harmony – they are recognizable by a central medallion with opulent floral ornaments that spread across the entire surface in the form of vignettes, leaves, and arabesques. The patterns are exceptionally detailed and crafted with high precision, lending the carpet a sense of delicacy and nobility.

The Color Palette of Kashan carpets typically includes deep reds, dark blues, ivory, and golden hues, occasionally featuring softer bluish or pastel tones. Colors are derived from natural dyes, such as indigo, rhubarb roots, pomegranate, or walnut shells, which impart a special softness and warmth.
