The city of Kashan lies 250 km south of Tehran, in a large oasis by the Kavir Desert in central Iran. This area has been inhabited since prehistoric times and was already important during the Sasanian dynasty, as well as later after the arrival of Islamic culture. Kashan carpets are made from the finest kork wool (from lambs’ necks). They are woven using the asymmetrical knotting technique (Persian knot), which makes the carpets exceptionally fine yet very durable. They feature a wide range of floral patterns, as well as arabesques, palmettes, and leaf motifs—an ideal design for classic interior décor. They represent the heritage of the golden age of carpet making in Iran (16th and 17th centuries), when Shah Abbas was a great patron of this art.
