Persian Tabriz Carpet

This rug is a quintessential example of the Tabriz “Mahi” aesthetic, which functions differently from classic medallion designs—appearing more as a textile surface that vibrates with detail.

The pattern is exceptionally dense and repetitive, composed of tiny rosettes and curved leaves that form the characteristic “fish” or Herati motif. This fine structure creates an almost optical effect—the surface looks alive and slightly undulating, like water, which is the origin of the name (“Mahi” means fish). While there is a central medallion, it is not dominant; instead, it almost blends into the background, giving the rug a very calm and continuous appearance.

The color palette is more reserved and earthy—a combination of beige, brown, dark blue, and subtle reddish tones. Such colors are typical for Mahi Tabriz rugs, as they intentionally “soften” the complexity of the pattern so it is not overwhelming to the eye. The overall effect is warm, slightly vintage, and highly sophisticated.

The material, wool with silk highlights, gives the rug a dual character. The wool provides a soft, compact, and durable base, while the silk subtly emphasizes individual details and lends the surface a slight sheen that shifts with the light. This further enhances the depth of the dense ornamentation.

In an interior setting, such a rug is extremely versatile because it is not visually “loud,” despite being very rich. Due to the fine pattern, it conceals wear well and is therefore suitable for living rooms, dining rooms, or high-traffic areas.
