Persian Mud carpet with a characteristic repeating minimalist Herati design, where there is a medallion or Persian tower in the middle. In a burgundy red frame there are lotus flowers and an archaic Mesopotamian boteh figure. Silk shines from the flowers. A beautiful carpet that conjures up different color spectra over and over again in different lighting.
Classical (master) hand-knotted carpets are carpets dominated by motifs of arabesques, flowers, gardens, animals, hunting and scenes from the rich Persian mythology. They are made in master workshops in cities such as Isfahan, Tabriz, Nain, Ghom, Mashhad, Kerman, Mud, Kashan …. They are the bearers of the tradition of making carpets for Persian courts, which reached its peak in the 16th century during the time of Shah Abbas, who was a great patron of the arts. Carpets from this period are today on display in museums in Tehran, Vienna, London, New York … They are made precisely according to pictorial templates, the authors of which were renowned painters or carpet designers. The Mahi motif (rhomboid – a diamond surrounded by four palmettes) was developed in the city of Herat along the Silk Road as early as the 16th century, when it was the center of culture and art in this part of the world, where the greatest masters of the time created works under the patronage of the rulers.
