Nain carpets are some of the most prized and famous Persian carpets. Nain is a town on the edge of the Dasht-e Kavir desert in central Iran and is known for producing very fine, especially classic Persian carpets. The carpets are made of cotton warp (wotch), and very fine and soft wool. Silk is used to emphasize the design of the ornaments.

The carpets are made based on graphic templates (Persian – talim) , where you can see all the details and colors for each used cart. This type of carpets are made in master workshops, which are usually family-run with multi-generational craftsmanship, and the templates are the work of established carpet designers and painters. The most common motifs on them are various flowers, arabesques, animals, gardens, hunting scenes and depictions from the rich treasury of Persian mythology. These carpets are the bearers of the tradition of making carpets for Persian courts, which reached its peak in the 16th century during the Safavid dynasty. Nain carpets are like jewels among Persian carpets, they have a sophisticated, rich design and are therefore often used in protocol buildings, palaces, courts…

The great carpet connoisseur and lover Alexander A. Loos once wrote: “There is no more beautiful connection between an art object and a useful product than this genuine Oriental carpet, a unique work of art with the most concentrated utility of all products of human creation.”
