Saruk carpets are made in a village of the same name, not far from the city of Arak in Iran, and also in the broader region of the western part of central Iran. Other diverse carpets originate from this area, with names depending on the place of production: Ferahan, Ferahan Saruk, Mahal, Vis… These carpets were once highly valued by Americans, which led to a real boom in the region, as large quantities of carpets were exported to the American market. Between 1910 and 1950, the largest number of these carpets were produced, which were called “American Saruk”, as the colors used in the carpets were adapted to the taste of American buyers.

The carpet pictured is a classic example of a Persian Sarough carpet, originating from central Iran, specifically from the Arak region and the village of Sarouk. It is characterized by a richly decorated central medallion, which in this case is light blue with yellow, pink, and red accents, set against a dark blue (indigo) background. The entire field of the carpet is adorned with luxurious floral patterns, composed of stylized flowers, leaves, and intertwined vines, creating a symmetrical and balanced composition. The carpet’s border is wide, in contrasting red, and decorated with a series of floral motifs that beautifully frame the central part. The carpet’s color palette is warm and varied, with shades of blue, red, beige, light blue, pink, and white. The material from which the carpet is made is typically high-quality wool, woven on a cotton foundation, giving it softness and durability. This is a hand-knotted carpet with a high knot density, which is characteristic of prestigious and long-lasting Persian carpets. Sarough carpets are highly valued for their durability, classic design, and artistic value, often passed down from generation to generation and considered collector’s items.
