For millennia, rugs have served nomadic peoples as faithful and enduring companions, utilized for floor coverings, as furnishings, decorative accents, horse saddles, sleeping mats, travel tents, meditation aids, and even as shrouds for the final farewell. Special rugs are also crafted for healing and wedding ceremonies. These rugs are replete with rich symbolism, facilitating communication across time and space, with messages conveyed through diverse compositional structures, colors, and figures. The Azeri people, residing in northern Iran and Azerbaijan, have been crafting rugs in an original, unchanged manner for centuries and millennia. The weaving techniques and traditional patterns are passed down through generations, yet the final appearance of each rug is primarily shaped by the weaver’s personal touch. Mothers teach their daughters how to spin and utilize wool, while fathers impart knowledge of wool dyeing and loom construction to their sons. The motifs depicted are drawn from their environment, local traditions, and daily lives. Thus, one can observe everything from stars to archaic Mesopotamian forms within these rugs. Under skilled hands, beautiful combinations are created using natural plant dyes and ancient patterns.
