For nomadic peoples, rugs have been faithful and proven companions for millennia, used for covering floors, as furniture, as decoration, for horse saddles, for sleeping, as travel tents, for meditation, as shrouds for final farewells from the world… Special rugs are made for healing and wedding ceremonies. Rugs are full of rich symbolism, serving as communication through time and space, with messages expressed through various compositional structures, colors, and figures within them. The Azeris, who have lived in the northern part of Iran and Azerbaijan for centuries and millennia, produce rugs in an original, unchanged manner. The production technique and traditional patterns are passed down from generation to generation, but the final appearance of the rug depends most on the personal touch of the maker. Mothers teach daughters how to spin and use wool, while fathers pass on knowledge of dyeing wool and making looms to their sons. The motifs they depict are drawn from their environment, local tradition, and their lives. Thus, you can find everything from stars to archaic Mesopotamian forms in the rugs. Characteristic stylized figures (stepped diamonds and stars) give special playfulness to this Azeri kilim. Under skilled fingers, wonderful combinations have been created using natural earth colors and archaic patterns.
