This silk Persian rug from the city of Ghom is an exceptional example of classical Persian art, where remarkable hand craftsmanship, symbolism, and aesthetic refinement come together. It is made of pure silk, which gives it a luminous, almost living surface. Silk is used not only for the motifs, but also for the foundation and weft, which is characteristic of rugs of the highest quality.
The black background creates a dramatic contrast with the rich floral motifs, including roses, daisies, irises, and other flowers in vivid shades of red, orange, blue, purple, and gold. At the centre of the composition is an ornamental vase from which a lush bouquet of flowers grows — an image symbolising the garden of paradise and abundance, a motif often found in Islamic art.
The border of the rug is richly decorated with golden arabesques and floral motifs, framing the rug like a work of art. At the top is an inscription in Persian script, representing the master’s signature, as is customary with valuable pieces. The entire composition is balanced and symmetrical, with extraordinary attention to detail, indicating a very high knot density per square metre — often more than one million, which is typical of top-grade Ghom rugs.
The value of such a rug lies not only in its material, but also in the time, knowledge, and tradition it represents. It is a work of art that is rarely used as a floor rug; it is more often displayed on a wall or kept as part of a collection. The rug tells a story of centuries of Persian art, spirituality, and a refined sense of beauty.
