This rug is a beautiful example of a soumak kilim, a traditional hand-woven rug from the Caucasus region and northwestern Iran, crafted using the soumak technique—a distinctive type of flatweave, recognizable by its characteristic texture and embossed appearance. This particular piece is made from a combination of wool and silk, imparting both structural strength and visual sophistication and luster.

The central part of the rug is adorned with a dynamic, geometrically designed composition: a series of large rhomboid or diamond medallions, arranged along its entire axis, which is typical of nomadic and tribal patterns. Each rhombus is colored differently—red, white, black, or ochre—and often contains animal symbols, stylized birds, sheep, horses, or protective motifs that hold special significance in folklore (e.g., home protection, fertility, strength).

The background and borders are also richly decorated with geometric and figural motifs, featuring a characteristic stepped or zigzag structure that reflects the energy of movement and change. The color palette is based on natural dyes: red from madder roots, dark blue from indigo, yellow from pomegranate rinds—imbuing the rug with a natural, earthy warmth.

In a space, such a soumak kilim appears striking yet authentic, and with its informal structure and ethnographic character, it introduces the spirit of nomadism, freedom, and archaic beauty. Due to its elongated shape, it is ideal for hallways, entryways, beside a bed, or as an accent piece with minimalist furniture.

Soumak kilims are more than just rugs—they are woven records of cultures that did not create monumental architecture, but rather mobile art, the portable warmth of home, woven from nature, tradition, and memory.
