This silk soumak kilim is a beautiful example of traditional Azerbaijani textile art. It is made in the soumak technique, where coloured threads are wrapped around the warp threads, creating a slightly raised texture characteristic of this type of weaving. The kilim is woven from silk, evident in its delicate sheen and fine texture.
The central field of the kilim is divided into three horizontal registers, each with a different motif. The upper register depicts two stylised birds facing each other, likely a phoenix or an eagle, symbolising protection, strength, or spiritual rebirth. The middle section shows two upright animals, perhaps deer or horses, with emphasised saddles, suggesting the importance of freedom, fertility, or nobility. The lower section features two domed forms that may represent mountains, tents, or abstract architectural symbols linked to nomadic heritage or sacred sites.
Around these central motifs appear stylised eight-pointed flowers and stars, common symbols of the sun, eternity, and fertility. The kilim is framed by multiple bands of geometric patterns, including crosses, diamonds, and stars, which often serve a protective or talismanic role. The colour palette features natural silk white as the base, complemented by dark red, yellow, orange, green, and black. The colours are soft and natural, typical of the use of traditional plant dyes.
Based on its style and craftsmanship, this kilim likely originates from northern Azerbaijan, possibly from regions such as Sheki, Guba, or Lahij, known for silk soumak weavings. Historically, such kilims were often made as prestige pieces, used for special occasions, weddings, or as part of a dowry. This is not merely a decorative item, but a bearer of symbolism, history, and identity characteristic of the Caucasian cultural area.
